Animal Genetics & Breeding

Department of Animal Genetics & Breeding is imparting theoretical and practical instructions to undergraduate students as per Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education Degree Course Regulations of Veterinary Council of India. The department is also conducting postgraduate master (MVSc) and doctoral (PhD) degree program.

  1. Mandates/ objective of the department: Department has following mandate and objectives:
  • To carry out education in the field of Animal Genetics & Breeding. 
  • To undertake research in the field of Animal Genetics & Breeding.
  • To develop breeding strategies for the improvement of the livestock sector as and when required.
  • To educate the farmers of western Uttar Pradesh about sustainable Livestock production with their genetic improvement.

Research activities

a. Student research: One M.V.Sc Student Dr. Hira Arif had been admitted in academic session 2022-23. She will be undertaking research work related to “Bioinformatics in Animal Genetics & Breeding” during academic session 2023-24.

b. Other research activities if any: The department has made collaboration with State Livestock and Agriculture Farm, Babugarh, Hapur for sharing lactation records from the history sheet registers and herd inventory registers, etc of Hariana cattle to carry out animal breeding research.

One Ph.D. work entitled “Production performance and genetic evaluation of breeding efficiency in Hariana cattle” had been completed and two M.Sc. research work are undergoing from this data. Department faculties are contributing as member advisory committee of these students.

Extension activities: Participation in Kisan Mela organized by SVPUAT, Meerut.
