Vegetable Science

The Department of Vegetable Science was established in 2020-21 to carry out research on improvement and production technology in different vegetable crops. Since then, the department has been continuously striving to develop superior high yielding vegetable varieties / hybrids in both tropical and subtropical vegetable crops through crop improvement programmes and also to bring out appropriate production technologies which will minimize the cost and maximize vegetable production and profitability. Presently, there are 06 scientists working in the division. The department carved into with the aim to devise location-specific tailor-made technologies for sustainable production by undertaking basic and strategic research and education for enhancing productivity of vegetable crops and their utilization or value addition thereof. The department has the intake of 06 students at master’s level and 04 students at Ph.D. level where the course curriculum has been designed and implemented as per BSMA committee of Vth dean’s committee of ICAR.

The major research activities encompasses protected cultivation and off-season production of high value crops, development of integrated nutrient management package, designing technologies for improving resource/ input use efficiency, ameliorating abiotic stresses through grafting, standardization of eco-friendly means of cultivation such as organic farming, conservation agriculture etc. The department is instrumental behind the development of many farmers-friendly technologies. In addition, it is effectively promoting Institute’s technologies and implementing many schemes successfully across several districts, through intensive extension activities, for the upliftment of socio-economic status of vegetable growers. The Division is equipped necessary research facilities comprising laboratories and protected structures for carrying out novel research on vegetable crops. Research activities in the division are being undertaken mainly on germplasm collection, evaluation and maintenance of vegetable crops; breeding of vegetable varieties/hybrids for high yield, disease resistance and other premium traits and mapping and tagging of genes for useful traits. The division is equipped with the state of art research laboratories and modern equipment for carrying out innovative research on vegetable crops.

Research and extension Achievements:

Department of vegetable science is working on various vegetable crops suitable for North West Plain Zone region and may be adopted for this region.  As a result, the following achievements have been done so far:

  • Developed 12 varieties for different vegetable crops
  • Optimized the low-cost production techniques  by using organic manures and natural farming system for different vegetable crops like, Potato, Fenugreek, Cauliflower, Garlic, etc.
  • Promoting underutilized vegetable crops.
  • Identified superior germplasm of different vegetable crops for cultivation in North West Plain Zone region.
  • Characterized the Ty-2 gene responsible for mosaic virus of tomato crop.
  • Promoting the protected cultivation of vegetable crops by using hydroponic, aeroponic and NFT system.
  • 8 research projects on different aspects of vegetables have been completed so far. In addition to that 05 research projects on protected cultivation and  organic farming  have been submitted to the different funding agencies for financial assistance.
  • Department have been organized 06 training programs on different vegetable aspects.
  • Organized 05 national and international conferences to discuss the burning issues on a scientific platform.
  • Producing the vegetable seeds of different crops like: Potato, Turmeric, Spinach, Coriander, Radish, Turnip, Fenugreek, Saunf, Pea etc. seed of these crops is being distributing to the local farmers.
  • Produced nutrient richer and cheaper organic NADEP compost by using different waste materials like parthenium, straw dust, sugarcane leaves etc. to minimize the cost of cultivation of the farmers.
  •  Established a high density fruit orchard to demonstrate the maximum income in per unit area.
  • Providing the day to day consultancy related to the horticulture crop to the farmers by online and offline means of communications


We have sufficient number of smart class rooms fully occupied with interactive panel board to take the classes very effectively

We have common laboratories for PG and Ph.D. students. Beside these we have Post harvest laboratory, tissue culture and molecular biology laboratory also.

We have open field lab to conduct the experiment at HRC.
