The department of Biotechnology is one of the major departments of Agriculture College, which came into existence with the inception of university and started its M.Sc degree program from the year 2002. The department is catering to the requirement of teaching, research and extension in field of Biotechnology with the following mandates
To deliver the quality teaching leading to the degree of M.Sc Biotechnology and Ph.D Biotechnology.
To carry out Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, In-vitro cell and Tissue culture research on various applied aspects of major agricultural crops including horticultural crops and medicinal plants.
True to type in-vitro micropropagation, multiplication and distribution of plantlets of sugarcane, banana and other crops
Infrastructure
The Department have one Seminar room, one PG class room, one Molecular Biology Lab/ PG lab, one Genomics Lab, Tissue Culture Lab I and II equipped with RT-PCR, HPLC, IRGA, Gradient PCR, Spectrophotometer Refrigerated Centrifuge, Gel documentation system, Refrigerator (-80°C) and Refrigerator (-20°C) along with basic instrument.
The Field laboratory having the facility of Rain out shelter, Phytotron, Transgenic glass house, Poly house and Green house.
Courses Program Offered
The department is running PG program in M.Sc (Ag.) Biotechnology with the intake of 8 students (4 open+2 paid+2 NRI) through CATET. The department is also running Ph.D program in Agricultural Biotechnology with the intake of 8 students (4 open+2 paid+2 NRI) through CATET.
The Department has adopted the M.Sc Agricultural Biotechnology and Ph.D Agricultural Biotechnology course programs as per the BSMA guidelines of ICAR. The program is aimed to generate Human Resource in different areas of biotechnology which would not only feed the demand of biotechnology related industries but also would provide trained and motivated persons required for academic institution

Student strength of department:
53 Ph.D and 65 M.Sc students have completed their degree program
Student achievements: 11 Ph.D and 04 M.Sc students received national fellowship viz. UGC, DST Inspire, Moulana Azad. ICAR, ICAMR and ASPEE foundation, Mumbai. 21 students qualified NET examination.
Placement of the Students: The departmental students are at various positions in reputed organizations viz.Agricultural Research Services in ICAR institutes, State Agriculture Universities, State Universities, teaching positions at secondary and senior secondary level, in Banking sectors and LIC of India.

• Publication summary: The Department has published more than 250 research papers in national and International Journal of repute with good NAAS rating. The Department contributed 24 books, 56 book chapters in edited books and published more than 874 popular articles. The Department also submitted the 26 gene sequences to NCBI from different crops.
